Dr. Mukhtar H. Ali (PhD, University of California, Berkeley) is Associate Professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign and director of The Word Academy. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the Muhyiddin Ibn ʿArabi Society, a leading international journal dedicated to the study of Ibn ʿArabī and related intellectual traditions. His scholarship focuses on Islamic philosophy, Sufism, and the intellectual history of the Islamic world, with particular attention to metaphysics, ethics, and the relationship between reason and spiritual formation.

In addition to his academic training in Islamic studies, Dr. Ali holds formal qualifications in Traditional Chinese Medicine and teaches courses that explore classical medical traditions and their philosophical and spiritual foundations. His work in this area reflects a comparative and integrative approach to healing, bringing Islamic, Chinese, and other traditional medical systems into conversation around shared concerns such as balance, embodiment, ethics, and the cultivation of well-being.

Dr. Ali’s teaching emphasizes disciplined reading, conceptual clarity, and integrative understanding within the broader framework of the Islamic intellectual tradition. At The Word Academy, he guides students through the philosophical, metaphysical, and spiritual sciences cultivated in the classical heritage of Islam. His courses combine intellectual rigor with sustained engagement with the tradition’s ethical and contemplative dimensions, encouraging students to approach its texts with attentiveness, discernment, and an appreciation of their relevance for contemporary life.
